The story of Ramayana features the entire area of Rameswaram. Lord Rama performed thanksgiving rituals after the victory over the demon king Ravana at Sri Lanka. Lord Rama made a Lingam of Lord Shiva and prayed to extend his hands of help to rescue his wife. Lord Shiva appeared and blessed him and as a result he made a Lingam of Lord Shiva and it fascinates the worshippers of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.
