Ranipet

The name Ranipet means "Place of the Queen". Being separated from Vellore district along with Tirupathur, Ranipet stands as a unique district. The name of the city has a historical significance when King Desingh Raja, 22, was killed in a battle with Nawab Sadatulla Khan of Arcot. According to the cruelty of the customs that existed at that time, the young king's widow committed "Sati" by jumping on her husband's funeral pyre.
