Krishnagiri city sprawls over an area of 5,143 sq km. This city is encircled by Vellore and Tiruvannamalai districts in the east and Karnataka in the west, while Andhra Pradesh lies to the north and Dharmapuri in the south.

The name Krishnagiri is derived from Krishna- Black and Giri- hill, as this area is spotted with lots black granite hillock it is named so. After several archaeological researches, Krishnagiri is believed to be one of the oldest inhabited places in the country. Krishnagiri is a great place of history freaks as it houses lots of caves, rock paintings which are believed to be painted during the Iron age.
