Thiruvarur is the headquarters of the Thiruvarur district in the state of Tamilnadu. This city of temples, music and lagoons was earlier a part of Nagapattinam district. Thiruvarur lies adjacent to the Bay of Bengal and is very close to the delta region, which is formed by the tributaries of river Cauvery.

The Thagarajar temple at Thiruvarur is world famous. This temple is acclaimed as one of the largest temple complexes in India. Thiruvarur is blessed with rich water resources, and fertile land, ergo agriculture is the main occupation here. Thiruvarur is one of the few towns on Tamilnadu with lots of temple tanks, reservoirs, and rivers. Thiruvarur is an ideal getaway from the city life.
