Sittanavasal - Monuments - Tamilnadu

Situated in the district of Pudukottai, Tamil Nadu, Sittanavasal is a clear example of the ancient ways of living. Many ancient burial sites are found here. It is a scared place to Jains as many Jain monks inhabited the hills which are proved by the presence of Jain beds on the hill.

Specialty

The monument is under the protection of the Archeological Survey of India. The Jain beds atop the hill are carved out under a low roof and consists a raised portion which were perhaps used as pillows. There are many inscriptions in the hills and also on the beds. A cave temple which is similar to the Pallava style of construction was excavated and was dedicated to the Jain Tirthankaras. The paintings similar to that of the Ajanta caves are also found at the monument. Exquisite sketches of Apsaras, the royal family, Samavasarna assembly and other captivating images of the time are portrayed here. A number of Jain sculptures can be found in this region.
