Poompuhar is one of the most ancient, and historical city situated in Sirkali Taluk. 2000 years before, Poompuhar was the thriving port city extending its commercial activity with Rome and other European Countries. It was also a flourishing capital city of ancient Chola King, Karikala Cholan. Based on the Tamil Epic Silappathikaram, several symbolic monuments were put up on the Poombuhar beach. The Architectural beauty of the Art Gallary in seven storeys. The Nedungal Mandram and the Sculptural beauty of Elanchi Mandtram, Pavai Mandram and the monumental theatre called Kotrapandal attract thousands of visitors everyday. Thirukkadiyur, the famous pilgrim centre, Taraquebar, the Historical centre, Keelapeumpallam, Thiruvengadu and Vaitheeswarankoil, the famous Navagraha Sthalams are located near Poompuhar.
