Poompuhar is one of the most ancient, and historical city situated in Sirkali Taluk. 2000 years before, Poompuhar was the thriving port city extending its commercial activity with Rome and other European Countries. It was also a flourishing capital city of ancient Chola King, Karikala Cholan. Based on the Tamil Epic Silappathikaram, several symbolic monuments were put up on the Poombuhar beach. The Architectural beauty of the Art Gallary in seven storeys. The Nedungal Mandram and the Sculptural beauty of Elanchi Mandtram, Pavai Mandram and the monumental theatre called Kotrapandal attract thousands of visitors everyday. Kovalam and Kannagi story is depicted in bas – relief showing important episodes in the Art Gallery.

Poompuhar is one of the flourishing tourist centers in Tamil Nadu, which lies on the East Coast road and attracts a large number of tourists daily. Thirukkadiyur, the famous pilgrim centre, Taraquebar, the Historical centre, Keelapeumpallam, Thiruvengadu and Vaitheeswarankoil, the famous Navagraha Sthalams are located near Poompuhar. A large number of tourists and pilgrims are visiting these centres daily. Poompuhar Tourist Complex is spread over an area of 33 acres.
