Poompuhar is one of the most ancient, and historical city situated in Sirkali Taluk. 2000 years before, Poompuhar was the thriving port city extending its commercial activity with Rome and other European Countries. It was also a flourishing capital city of ancient Chola King, Karikala Cholan. Based on the Tamil Epic Silappathikaram, several symbolic monuments were put up on the Poombuhar beach.
