Unusually, he holds the conch handle in his right hand and the disc chakra in his left. There are also shrines for Mahalakshmi, Guru Sukracharya, sage Mrikandu and three Azhwar saints. Another prominent feature of this temple is the 11- tierd Rajagopuram temple is 52 meters high and is also the third tallest temple in Tamil Nadu. This temple celebrates many festivals almost every year like Vaikunta Ekadashi and Panguni Brahmotsavam.

According to Hindu mythology, Vamana, a Brahmin dwarf incarnation of Lord Vishnu, appeared here to put an end to the pride of the asura king Bali. Later, a temple was built in the same place by the Cholas in medieval times and acquired contributions from the Vijayanagar and the Nayak kings.
