Adhirangam Ranganathaswamy Temple or Ranganatha Perumal Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu in Tamil Nadu. This temple is located at Adithiruvarangam in Sankarapuram taluk, Tamil Nadu. The main attraction of Adhirangam Ranganathaswamy Temple is its Dravidian style architecture. The temple has a plain rajagopuram surrounded by high granite walls. The temple covers an area of 2 acres (8,100 m2) and has two precincts. The presiding deity, Ranganatha Perumal, has a beautiful image, 29 feet (8.8 m) high, made of mooligai silai who appears in a sleeping position. Adisesha, the five-headed serpent, serves as an umbrella of the presiding deity. A statue of Sridevi remains near the head of the temple and a statue of Bhudevi is located near the foot. Alvars' image was placed in the preceding hall of the sanctum. This temple celebrates various famous festival related to Lord Vishnu like Vaikunda Ekadashi, Krishna Jeyanthi, Ramanavami and Adi Pooram.

History of Adhirangam Ranganathaswamy Temple

According to legend, the moon god - Chandra lost all his light due to a curse. All the celestial deities suggested him to worship Vishnu by building a holy tank for him in this place. So Chandarn built a tank called as Chandra Pushkarani, and worshiped Ranganatha with holy water, believing that his curse had been lifted. It is believed that Vishnu, pleased with their devotion, appeared in the form of Rangantha and was given permanent darshan in this place.
