Hogenakkal Water Falls

Hogenakkal falls is located in the Dharmapuri district of Tamilnadu. The peerless beauty of this falls earned the nickname “Niagara waterfalls of India”.

This waterfalls cascades at the height of 20 m. River Cauvery is the main source of this falls, as River Cauvery comes from dense herbal forest, the water at these falls have miraculous medicinal properties. This place has carbonatite rock which are considered to be the oldest kind of rocks in the South Asian region. Hide boat rides are also famous at this place.

Speciality of the place

The water falls at a great current from the top of the rock, so it appears as a cloudy mist and gives an illusion of white smoke. The waterfalls are also a best place for coracles ride. The sound of the water falling is equivalent to thunder stroking and some time it echoes like continuous drumming. This falls later joins the 60 sq m Mettur Stanley Reservoir.

Tourist attractions

Apart from bathing and boating Hogenakkal is famous for freshly caught fish fries. Even we can buy raw fresh fish from the seller and make a bon fire and cook it. There are lots of restaurants, petit stalls that provide fresh hot fish curry. The fishes available here are katla, robu, kendai, keluthi, valai, mirgal, aranjan and jilaby. In the lake nearby people are allowed to swim and bath.

In Hogenakkal falls the tourists can indulge in many activities’ country boat ride, camping, campfire, angling and lot more enthusiastic activities. This waterfall is also an apt place for photoshoots.

The best time to visit

The apt time to visit Hogenakkal is after the monsoon, the only thing is that it will be crowed during this time. During off season Hogenakkal is famous for boat riding, as the waterfalls will not be as forceful during monsoon season. So, it is possible for the coracles to go under the falls and enjoy its beauty. Coracles known as Parisal by locals can accommodate about 6 persons, riding in this can surely be adventurous. These coracles are made out of bamboo and hides. The temperature during summer season varies from 23–34 °C and during winter season it ranges from 13–27 °C (55–81 °F)

Hogenakkal is located Dharmapuri district of Tamil Nadu. Bangalore is just at the distance of 180 km from this waterfalls. Busses are available from Bangalore, Dharmapuri, Erode, and Salem.
