The renowned tourist destination, popular for the architecture, wide moats and huge walls is the Vellore Fort located at the center of the Vellore City. The fort is very significant for its moat as there were as much as 10000 crocodiles floating in the moat prohibiting the invaders. The fort has been existing from the 16th century and has been under the control of the Vijayanagara empires, Maratha Kings and finally the British Rulers until the time of Independent India.

The complete construction of the fort has been done with granite stones and the fort houses the places for worship for Hindus, Christians and Muslims. The popular Jalakandeswarar temple, an ancient Church and a mosque are inside the fort. There are other Government offices are functioning inside the fort complex. Located at the exact center of the city, the Vellore Fort attracts large number of tourists every day

Best time to visit : As Vellore is prone to the hot sun most of the months, it is ideal to visit Vellore between October and March.
