About Amaravathy Crocodile park
Crocodiles are both highly dangerous and interesting reptiles. Their crude body scales, sharp teeth, bulgy eyes-everything is a subject of fascination.
Hence, the government has started a program of captive breeding of crocodiles at Amaravathy. The crocodile farm at Amaravathy is the largest crocodile farm in India. The main objective of this project is to collect crocodile eggs from wild clutches, rear them in captivity, and release the young crocodile in the wild to restore its status. This project was started in 1976 and has been running successfully. Currently, there are 98 crocodiles in Amaravathy. The three varieties of crocodiles available on the farm include the mugger crocodile, the Persian , and the marsh crocodile.
This park is well maintained, and the steep steps on the dam lead to an amazing, picturesque view of the north and south of Annamalai. This place is converted into a district excursion centre for tourism.
The commitment to protect crocodilian species, such as the impressive Saltwater Crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) and the fearsome Mugger Crocodile (Crocodylus palustris), is the fundamental aspect of this sanctuary. Dispersed over vast areas, the park offers a natural sanctuary where these ancient reptiles flourish, shielded from the dangers of habitat degradation and human intrusion.
Amaravathi Crocodile Park welcomes tourists with a blend of education and adventure. With the help of guided tours, tourists can get an up-close look at these extinct animals and learn about their behaviour and vital function in the ecosystem while seeing them in their natural environment. Beyond being a mere tourist attraction, the park is the centre of breeding and research initiatives to protect crocodilian populations.
