About Kodaikanal Star Lake

Kodaikanal Star Lake - The Heart of Kodaikanal

If there's one spot that perfectly captures the allure of Kodaikanal, its Kodaikanal Lake. Often referred to as Kodai Lake or Kodaikanal Star Lake because of its unique shape, this stunning man-made lake is nestled in the heart of the hill station. Surrounded by misty hills, towering trees, and a vibrant lakeside vibe, it's a must-visit on any Kodaikanal trip.

Kodaikanal Star Lake - Overview

Spanning about 24 hectares, Kodaikanal Lake features a scenic 5 km road that winds around its perimeter. Unlike a secluded natural lake tucked away in the mountains, Kodai Lake is deeply intertwined with the daily life of Kodaikanal. Visitors come here to enjoy boating, cycling, horse riding, photography, shopping, and relaxed walks.

The best part is that you do not need to rush. Take an hour to relax by the water, watch the boats glide across the lake, and soak in the refreshing mountain air. That laid-back experience is what truly sets Kodaikanal Lake apart.

How Was Kodaikanal Lake Constructed?

The lake's history dates back to 1863, when Sir Vere Henry Levinge, the then Collector of Madurai, envisioned creating a lake in Kodaikanal. He constructed a bund across the natural drainage area to develop this water body.

What started as a meticulously planned project eventually became one of the hill station's iconic landmarks. Levinge also introduced fish to the lake and arranged for a boat to be brought in from Tuticorin. Over the years, boating has become a cherished part of the Kodaikanal experience.

Today, this historic lake is among the most visited attractions in Kodaikanal.
